Cat Calorie Calculator: How Much Should My Cat Eat?

Last updated

Most indoor cats need only 200–300 calories a day, which makes overfeeding easy. Enter your cat’s weight and lifestyle to see a daily target and how many cans or cups that is.

Cat Calorie Calculator

How much your cat should eat each day.

Which fits best?
Uses RER = 70 × (body weight in kg)^0.75 with standard feline life-stage factors. Pregnant or nursing cats and cats with medical conditions need a plan from your vet.

How it works

The calculator uses the veterinary resting energy formula (70 × body weight in kg^0.75) and multiplies it by a factor: about 1.2 for a neutered adult, 1.4 for an intact adult, 1.0 for an inactive indoor cat and 2.5 for kittens.

Never put a cat on a crash diet. Cats that stop eating can develop a serious liver condition (hepatic lipidosis), so weight loss must be slow and planned with your vet.

Frequently asked questions

How much wet food should a cat eat a day?

Divide the daily calories by the calories per can on the label. A typical 4 kg (9 lb) neutered cat needs about 240 kcal, which is roughly three small (85 g) pouches depending on the brand.

Is my cat overweight?

You should be able to feel the ribs easily under a thin layer of fat and see a waist from above. If not, ask your vet for a body condition score.
